Abstract

Genomic structures of crops have changed considerably through its domestication and evolutionary processes. Present day cultivated varieties are the outcomes of constant natural hybridization, artificial selection, conventional breeding or genetic manipulation of their wild ancestors. Origin of a crop and its domestication pathways can be traced back by genomic characterization from the available resources. With the advent of next generation sequencing (NGS) techniques and other potential genomic tools, these studies have become convenient too. Genetic mapping and population genetic studies are being aided by NGS assisted forward and reverse genetic approaches. Many of these advanced methods have also been endorsed to unravel the origin trajectory of important crop species like—rice, citrus, peanut, olive, tea, etc. This chapter summarizes the various genomic tools and data analyses resources which are employed to dissect the complex genomes and underlying evolutionary steps as well as the paradigms of decoding domestication history of several crops.
