Abstract
The study presented here focuses upon the MHCV truck segment in general and particularly on multi axle heavy trucks of 25 tonnes GVW and above, which is seeing an ever-growing acceptance among the Indian trucking fraternity - due to their supposed higher productivity, operational efficiency and consequentially higher profitability. The study establishes that multi-axle vehicles do have certain inherent advantages in terms of load carrying across different terrain and different load categories. It also highlights the safety aspects of heavy truck transportation by providing insight upon the efficiency of the drivers, which can be further improved by providing air-conditioned and factory-made cabins, as the degree of tiredness felt among the respondent drivers were observed to be less in comparison to the drivers in non-air-conditioned cabins. Overall, this paper captures the operational business sense of the transition from two-axle trucks to multi-axle trucks that has been happening in India since year 2000.
