Population, Sanitation and Health: A Geographical Study Towards Sustainability
Abstract
Introduction: Cognitive frailty (CF), the co-occurrence of physical frailty and cognitive impairment, adds a heavy toll to the course of population ageing and cognitive dysfunction by threatening health and living standard of the elderly. Its social dimension has garnered researchers’ attention worldwide. Alongside the neurobiological alternation on CF, the role of social capital appears to be adequately significant. Objectives: Since India lacks a large-scale investigation on CF and its related socio-demographic components, present study used data from the latest Longitudinal Ageing Study in India Wave 1 to evaluate CF among older adults. Materials and methods: Individuals who were either cognitively frail, pre-frail, or non-frail were considered for the study. Results and discussion: States like Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and Bihar had quite high prevalence rate of CF. Female participants, aged =60 years, from the central and eastern regions of India and residing in rural sectors, from poorest economic strata, and with lower educational attainment, showed significantly greater risk for CF. Interestingly, high social capital was inversely associated with the development of CF. Conclusion: The study recommends for early detection of CF to reduce the risk of further complications and to expand social networks and provide social support as an effective strategy to deal with CF.
